They enter Ma'azzara hurries to his room, upon entering the room she finds Gaishina not in her usual state, Ma'azzara bursts into tears and collapses on top of her.
Husaina rushes into the room, deeply distressed.
She says, "Ma'azzara, stop crying, get up let us go to the hospital." Without any squeamishness, Husaina touches Gaishina who is struggling to breathe, while Ma'azzara holds onto her crying. Husaina says, "Ma'azzara, let go of her, I will hold her. Take clothes to change into tomorrow morning, wear a hijāb and remove your headscarf." With a trembling body, Ma'azzara heads to where it is warm, and pulls out a lovely black yadisu brocade wrapper and blouse set. It is spotless, washed clean, and smells wonderful. She takes it for Gaishina, removes the headscarf, puts on a hijāb, folds the headscarf and puts it inside their bag, then comes over to Husaina.
Husaina says, "Alright then, let's go." Ma'azzara holds the edge of Gaishina's shoulder, and with Husaina helping, they come out.
Adamsy, watching them, hangs up his phone call with Faruk, his best friend. He steps out, opens the car door for them, and they help Gaishina inside—she is in a wretched state. Adamsy is terribly frightened upon seeing the elderly woman and keeps offering her words of comfort.
Ma'azzara climbs in to sit close to her. Adamsy closes the car door, takes Husaina's hand to help her into the front seat, closes it, walks around, gets into the driver's seat, starts the car, and takes the road toward the hospital they came from.
Husaina rests her head on Adamsy's chest while he drives with one hand, using the other to stroke her head and face. Husaina says, "My Adamsy." He strokes her face and says, "Yes, my Husaina, be patient. I will help them; truly they are in need of help." Husaina goes silent and snuggles against his body.
Ma'azzara is also hugging Gaishina, who is making strange wheezing and panting noises.
As soon as they arrive at the hospital, the doctors take custody of Gaishina and begin emergency procedures to save her life because she is in a critical condition.
Husaina hugs Ma'azzara, crying and consoling her. Adamsy keeps glaring at Ma'azzara because he feels she has taken his wife away from him.
They spend about 2 hours before the doctor comes out.
By that time, Ma'azzara has fallen asleep against Husaina's body.
Adamsy approaches the doctor and asks, "Doctor, how is the patient?" The doctor replies, "Alhamdulillah, she is better, but truly the illness has ravaged her severely because one of her kidneys has already started rotting away. Honestly, she must have an operation tomorrow, but you must take her to Agadez to make an effort tomorrow." Adamsy says, "May God bring tomorrow, Insha Allah, there is no problem. Give her all proper care. Tomorrow as soon as Fajr prayer is done, I will come and take her away." The doctor replies, "No problem, you may go in and see her." Adamsy says nothing; he nods his head, returns to Husaina, and says, "My babe, how shall we do this? She has fallen asleep, get up let's go home so I can rest a bit." Husaina stands up, and Ma'azzara wakes up with a start.
Husaina takes her hand and they head toward the room where Gaishina is, with Adamsy following behind them.
Upon entering, they see that she has been put on an IV drip, and even a breathing apparatus is attached to her body.
Ma'azzara goes right up to her, places her head on her chest, and closes her eyes.
Pity for her fills Husaina. She goes over, takes Ma'azzara, helps her up onto the bed, and says, "My younger sister, lie down and rest, we will go home and come back in the morning, Insha Allah, okay?" Ma'azzara nods her head without opening her eyes.
Husaina adjusts her lying position, turns to Adamsy, takes his hand, and says, "My dear, come so I can give you a massage and you can sleep." Adamsy breaks into a smile, squeezes her hand tighter, and they come out, pulling the door shut behind them.
Right inside the car, Husaina presses against Adamsy's body, comforting him. He just smiles at her all the way until they reach the front of the house.
There is a large shade canopy in front of the house meant for condolence visitors.
The house is a modest, well-structured place on all sides, looking just like a city house rather than a village home. When they enter, everyone in the house is asleep except Ummee, who is waiting for them in the parlor.
As they enter, there is a beautiful elder woman of about 45 years old, a fair-skinned Buzu woman of immense beauty—one look at her tells you these are people of means.
Ummee welcomes them and hugs Husaina. Adamsy hugs Ummee, acts playfully spoiled, and says, "Ummee, you didn't welcome me, only your daughter." Ummee gives him a playful slap and says, "Now stop all these greetings, go take a bath and rest, I've prepared everything for you." She says this as she releases them and steps into the bedroom.
Adamsy, seeing that Ummee has gone in, picks up Husaina bridal-style, and they head to the suite where they stay when visiting.
Upon arriving, they take a bath, put on nightwear, and lie down clinging to each other. Husaina gives Adamsy a light massage until she falls asleep, before sleep overtakes her too, pressed against her husband's body. Good morning.
✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨
The next morning, after Fajr prayer, Adamsy coaxes Husaina back to sleep because he doesn't want her to suffer, as she insists on following him to Agadez. He wants to arrive early, and as soon as the operation is finished, return to Audarass after finding someone to look after the old woman.
Adamsy tells Ummee everything, and she supports him—especially when she hears it is Gaishina, since she knows the old woman very well. Whatever visits she has in the village, they always greet each other. Ummee packs breakfast items for him to take along.
When Adamsy arrives at the hospital, Ma'azzara has bathed, changed clothes, and looks very neat after praying. She is sitting right in front of her grandmother, chatting with her, because she couldn't figure out how to turn on the tap until she called the doctor to turn it on for her.
Adamsy hands Ma'azzara her breakfast. She takes it, crawls underneath the bed, and eats her fill because he told her Gaishina wouldn't be eating anything. He doesn't look very welcoming; he just asks how the patient is and sits down, occasionally saying words of comfort to Gaishina, but alas, she doesn't know where she is—she is merely breathing.
Ma'azzara, after eating what she ate, comes out, washes her hands, and stares intently at Adamsy with her big eyes without him even realizing it. In a spoiled tone, she says, "Uncle, I am your favorite child, the one you even carried on your back, singing sweet songs and chatting with me. Even this thing I saw you do with Anty yesterday, you used to do it with me too. Don't you feel the staleness of people's mouths? Wallahi I just feel like I want to vomit..."
He widens his big eyes, jumps up angrily, and says, "Hey, who on earth..." His speech is cut short because the door is pushed open—it is the doctor. Adamsy turns to look at him. The doctor says, "Sir, the preparation for the trip is complete." Adamsy says, "Okay, let's go then." Some nurses enter with a patient bed, set it down, and lift Gaishina onto it. Just then, she opens her eyes, coughing, and looks at Adamsy. He quickly steps over to her, offering words of comfort.
She extends her hand to him, and Adamsy quickly takes and holds it.
Gaishina grips his hand, opens her mouth to speak, but nothing is heard. Ma'azzara steps closer and says, "My Gaishina, we've been discharged, we are going home, you've gotten better. Tomorrow you will tell me the pain medicine so I can go back to hawking..." Adamsy says, "Hey, we don't want nonsense." Gaishina says, "For God's sake, I am giving you a trust, take care of her as a trust, she has no one, she has no helper except me and God. Where is yesterday's young girl? Gather around and honor this trust..." Her voice suddenly stops as she gasps and tries to say something else, but nothing is heard. Adamsy angrily barks at the doctor, "Damn it, mister, check her health before we leave for Agadez."
Adamsy's voice cuts off completely upon seeing Gaishina stop moving, her eyes wide open and staring.
He feels a strange sweat break out over him.
The nurses place her back on the bed, and the doctor begins examining her. Ma'azzara steps close to Adamsy, grabs his hand, and says, "Uncle, look at the way she is acting! She did the exact same thing yesterday. Please treat her, she is my helper, I have no benefactor except her." Adamsy is unable to speak; his body is shaking, his heart is pounding.
He catches the doctor's voice saying, "Allahu Akbar Kabiran, kullu nafsin za'ikatul maut." Adamsy says, "Doctor, please don't tell me she is dead! For God's sake, where will I take this trust? How can you—just upon meeting me and not knowing me—hand someone's trust over to me? What am I going to do? Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un!" Ma'azzara lets go of Adamsy's hand, staggers backward, bursts into tears, and says, "You are lying, she is not dead! Wallahi if you kill my Gaishina, you will regret it for the rest of your lives!" She says this while crying and heads toward the body. Adamsy comes over to the body. Ma'azzara touches Gaishina's body—no part of it is moving. Adamsy reaches out his hand and closes Gaishina's eyes.
Ma'azzara, seeing that Gaishina has truly died, lets out a deafening scream and collapses—luuuuu—about to fall. Adamsy catches her, and she falls into his arms, unconscious. Adamsy widens his eyes and says, "Ya Allah, what kind of situation is this?" ....................✍🏻

Chapter 3
...Adamsy, deeply distressed, heads toward the exit door while carrying Ma'azzara in his arms since she is unconscious. He is completely flustered because he is not used to getting caught up in such emotional trauma.
Just as he reaches the door to leave, the doctor says, "Sir, bring her back for emergency care." Adamsy doesn't turn back; he stops and says, "Doctor, let's go to another room because I want her to receive proper care and get some rest. Give her sleeping injections; at least by the time her grandmother's burial is over, she won't have regained consciousness. If possible, let her sleep through the day since I am not settled, and I will return. I leave her in Allah's trust." He finishes speaking and walks out, filled with a mountain of anxiety. His face clearly shows it, as he has no idea what he is going to do with the girl's trust.
As Adamsy steps out, the doctor follows him along with a nurse.
The doctor shows Adamsy an empty room. Adamsy enters, lays her down on a small bed, adjusts her resting position, turns around, and walks out.
The doctor sets to work saving Ma'azzara's life. Within 30 minutes, Ma'azzara regains consciousness and lets out a massive scream, calling for Uncle and Gaishina, struggling and thrashing about. With difficulty, the doctor restrains her while the nurse prepares an injection. The doctor administers it, and within less than five minutes, sleep takes over her as she calls out for Uncle and Gaishina.
Upon stepping outside, Adamsy heads to his parked car, gets in, and calls Ummee to tell her what happened. Highly distressed, she says she will send two people over to escort the body back, and she will send someone to call Salamatu, Gaishina's younger sister, to inform the rest of the relatives so they can gather and hold the mourning period at Ummee's house, since Bature and Hassana want to help them, and she wants to help too.
Adamsy tells her not to tell Husaina yet so her mind won't be troubled while he is away and unable to comfort her.
That is exactly what happens. Ummee sends Agali and Gumar; everything is finished successfully, they are handed the body, and they head home. By that time, Ummee has already had the community relatives—Ma'azzara's family members who never cared about their lives—called. They arrive shedding hypocritical tears even before the body arrives. Husaina, on the other hand, is deep in peaceful sleep over there because Ummee didn't want her disturbed until Gaishina's burial was completed.
It doesn't take long before Adamsy arrives with Gaishina's body. The body is prepared and taken to her final resting place.
Husaina doesn't wake up until after Gaishina has been taken away and their relatives have started leaving. The death didn't bother them much anyway; they didn't even ask about Ma'azzara after performing their fake cries of intense grief.
Adamsy heads into the room to check on Husaina and finds no one there. The sound of running water coming from the direction of the bathroom confirms that Husaina is inside.
He sits on the edge of the bed waiting for her to come out, sinking into deep thoughts about Ma'azzara. What is he going to do now with the ward entrusted to him? Did this woman act justly by handing over someone else's ward to him? How is he supposed to take care of her trust when he doesn't love the girl at all? His bloodline doesn't click with her in the slightest. What adds to his hatred for the girl is her madness in calling him "Uncle." He simply has no idea what to do.
While he is deep in thought, Husaina comes out from her bath. Sitting on the edge of the bed, she finds him sitting gloomily. One look at him tells you his mind is far away. She didn't even know he had entered.
She smiles, walks over to him, taps his shoulder, and says, "Mon trésor, what happened? When did you arrive?"
Struggling to pull himself together and hide his distress, he pulls her into his lap, seats her there, and says, "My babe, just arrived now. Get up, let me dress you up." He lifts her up effortlessly and places her in front of the mirror, starting to apply lotion on her and dressing her in an atmosphere of mutual love and affection...
Looking at him through the mirror, she says, "Mon trésor, how is Gaishina? When is her operation going to be done? I pity this woman so much. Look at the condition she was in; if we hadn't helped yesterday, I don't know what state she would be in by today—she might have even lost her life."
His anxiety spikes again. He knows Husaina doesn't know about Gaishina's death. How is he going to break the news to her that Gaishina has died? He knows how easily Husaina gets overwhelmed and panics over minor things, let alone something like this that has touched her heart right from their very first meeting.
Husaina's words pull Adamsy out of his deep contemplation.

Chapter 4
...Entering Ummee's parlor, Husaina slips her hand out of Adamsy's, heads straight to Ummee, and sits close to her with modesty. She says, "Ummeena, good morning, condolences on our loss. Nini has left us, may God envelop her in His mercy and bring light and blessing to her grave." Ummee pulls her close, strokes her head, and says, "Amin ya Allah, my Husaina. And how are we taking the extra patience required for this other servant of God?"
She quickly raises her head, looking at Ummee before slowly turning to gaze at Adamsy, who is standing by the door with his hands tucked into his pockets, staring straight at them. His heart is filled with the dread of the anguish she will experience when told of Gaishina's death.
Looking at Ummee with a puzzled expression on her face, she asks, "Who else passed away, Ummee?"
Adamsy turns away, casting his gaze to the side because he doesn't want to watch her grief; he knows he cannot bear it. Ummee pulls her closer into an embrace and says softly, "That sick servant of God, Allah has also taken His own..."
In sheer panic, Husaina turns to look at Adamsy, who quickly looks away as if he didn't hear what Ummee said. Shaking her head, she buries her face in Ummee's chest, hugs her tightly, and bursts into a deep, heart-wrenching cry that touches the soul of anyone listening. At the same time, she is overwhelmed with intense pity for Ma'azzara and deep worry about the state she might fall into upon learning of the death of her most beloved grandmother, knowing the fierce love and strong bond between them.
Adamsy's heart is burning with immense pain from her crying. He strides over, sits down beside her, pulls her into a tight embrace against his chest, and comforts her. Ummee strokes her head and back, also soothing and encouraging her.
It takes a great deal of effort before she finally quiets down, having cried her heart out and thanked God. Slowly, she wipes her tears, draws a deep sigh, catches her breath, and settles back against his body. The death of Gaishina has deeply touched her heart, compounded by a profound pity for Ma'azzara.
Seeing that she has calmed down, Adamsy gently eases her away so she can rest against Ummee, closing her eyes as she feels unsettled inside. He stands up quietly, walks out of the room toward the front of the house to the condolence canopy, and sits with Harun, Gumar, and Hashim. They exchange condolences and continue receiving visitors coming to commiserate with them. Adamsy puts on a brave face, but his mind and thoughts are completely elsewhere—he is consumed by how he will fulfill the trust left to him, feeling as though the weight of the entire world has been placed squarely on his shoulders.
He sits there enduring it until the Zuhur call to prayer echoes from the mosque. They rise, perform the prayer, and then he enters the house to bathe, change clothes, and spray himself with strong, pleasant perfumes.
Right then, Husaina throws a tantrum, refusing to let him go back outside until he pulls her close, romances her, and coaxes her until she falls asleep. He lays her down, places a kiss on her cheek and forehead, turns around, and walks out of the room back to the condolence canopy outside.
Only after Asr does he return inside the house, bathe Husaina, help her perform ablution, and bring her out to pray. He dresses her neatly—she looks gorgeous. He changes his clothes too, and they head to the hospital to see Ma'azzara.
Upon arriving, they head straight to the room where she was admitted. By the time they enter, she has woken up while the doctor is standing over her, thrashing about, screaming, and calling out "Uncle" and "Gaishina." Husaina rushes over, pulls her into her arms, and tries to calm her down, but Ma'azzara flails away, refusing to stay still, continuing her wild struggles while crying out for Gaishina and Uncle. Deeply distressed, Husaina tries to pull her back into her embrace, but Ma'azzara slips away again, ignoring her pleas.
Piteously, Husaina looks up at the doctor in sheer distress and says, "Doctor, please do something about this..?"
Looking at her with a troubled expression, the doctor says, "She has been like this ever since she woke up; she just won't stay still... she keeps calling for Uncle." He turns to look at Adamsy and says, "Please come over and talk to her so she will calm down."
A wave of annoyance and sheer irritation hits Adamsy. He hates spoiled, whiny children, and he can already tell this girl is extremely pampered and spoiled. He opens his mouth to yell at her, but then he remembers the trust Gaishina placed in his hands, gripping them. Instantly, his demeanor softens. He walks over slowly, sits on the edge of the bed, takes her from Husaina's arms, holds her hand gently, and rests her head against his shoulder with soothing, hushed tones, patting her back as he says, "There now, be quiet, your Uncle is here... What is the matter?"
Hearing Adamsy's voice, Ma'azzara stops crying instantly, draws a sigh, and buries her head deeper into his chest, sobbing softly and catching her breath. With a feeling of mild revulsion, Adamsy uses his hand to gather her long, thick, silky hair, tying it back, and adjusts her hijab.
Husaina beams with joy, smiling as she says, "Mon trésor, you really are something. Wallahi I love what you did, you handled her well." She says this, feeling very happy inside.
As for Ma'azzara, as long as she hears Adamsy's voice near her, her mind is at peace. She snuggles completely against his body. Meanwhile, he softly strokes her soft hair with a sense of internal revulsion, hating the feeling of touching her skin and feeling thoroughly uncomfortable, but realizing he has no choice—he must take care of her because she is now his trust.
Seeing that she has calmed down and quieted, the doctor examines her again and finds nothing wrong. Adamsy looks up at the doctor and asks, "Can you discharge us now if there are no other issues?"
Nodding, the doctor says, "Yes, it was mostly shock that caused her to experience a prolonged faint, but she has no other issues. I can discharge you."
Slowly, Adamsy eases her off his body and steps aside. Husaina steps forward and hugs her. Ma'azzara stays quiet, casting a gaze at Adamsy as if she wants to swallow him whole; her greatest desire is simply to be near him. Happiness surges through her, bringing a profound sense of calm to her entire being.
Right at that moment, the reality of Gaishina's death hits her again, bringing a sharp, burning agony of grief. She bursts into tears all over again, wrenching herself away from Husaina's embrace, crying and screaming, "My Gaishina... Oh my God, my Gaishina.... Ohhhhhh, my Gaishina..."
She rushes down toward Adamsy in a panic and grips him tightly, crying, "Uncle, tell me, is it true she passed away?"
A strange feeling grips his heart. Gently, he pulls her close, holds her, looks into her face, and says in a soft, consoling voice, "Be patient, truly she has passed away, but Insha Allah I will hold you as a trust just like Gaishina entrusted you to me and Husaina..." He says this as he pulls Husaina into his embrace too, and the three of them hug one another. Ma'azzara is crying, Husaina is crying, and with great difficulty, Adamsy manages to soothe them.
The doctor discharges them. Holding Husaina's hand, while Husaina holds Ma'azzara's hand, they walk out, get into the car, and head home.
Ma'azzara sits in the back, while Adamsy and Husaina sit in the front. He holds one of Husaina's hands while driving with the other, and Husaina continues holding Ma'azzara's hand while the girl weeps uncontrollably, calling out Gaishina's name.
Arriving home, Husaina takes her to their suite, draws a bath for her, takes her into the bathroom, washes her hair, cleans her up, and brings out some of her own clothes for her to wear. The clothes are a bit tight on Ma'azzara with some difficulty, because Husaina is slender while Ma'azzara is fuller-figured, with all her youthful curves and young breasts standing out. Husaina cleans her up nicely, dresses her neatly, feeds her until she is completely full, and then, holding her hand, they head over to Ummee's suite.
Upon arrival, Ummee pulls her into an embrace, feeling deep pity for Ma'azzara. She begins consoling her with deep care, offering comforting words, telling her to be patient and pray for Gaishina—which is the only thing the deceased needs from her now. Ma'azzara nods while fresh tears stream down her face.
Around nine o'clock at night, Husaina and a few others are sitting in the parlor when Adamsy walks in, a phone pressed to his ear.
Summary
In this chapter, the narrative centers around the immediate aftermath of Gaishina’s sudden death at the hospital. While Ma'azzara is shattered by the loss of her grandmother and protector, Adamsy is left grappling with the heavy emotional burden of honoring Gaishina's dying wish—taking Ma'azzara in as his trust ("amana"). Husaina, initially unaware of the tragedy, is devastated when she learns the news, finding comfort in Adamsy's arms. Despite his personal aversion and irritation toward Ma'azzara's spoiled and dramatic temperament, Adamsy steps up to comfort and manage her frantic grief, eventually discharging her from the hospital and returning home to navigate this new, challenging family dynamic alongside Husaina and Ummee.
Description
The chapter is an emotionally charged exploration of grief, responsibility, and shifting family dynamics set against a backdrop of traditional community life in Niger. It vividly portrays the stark contrast between sudden, devastating loss and the tender attempts at domestic comfort. The author highlights psychological conflict through Adamsy's internal struggle—balancing his deep affection for his wife, Husaina, against his profound reluctance and discomfort in assuming guardianship over an emotionally dependent, high-maintenance orphan. Rich in dialogue and sensory details, the scene captures the raw vulnerability of youth, the complexities of polygamous or extended household structures, and the heavy weight of keeping a deathbed promise.
