Act I: The Parting at the Gate
"Haba Papi! What took you so long? You returned way too early!" From the other end of the line, Daddy replied, "I said, come outside right now, will you?"
Shakeerah made a mock-pouting gesture with her mouth, as though he were standing right in front of her, and whispered, "Uh-umm," before cutting the call.
The old woman cast a curious glance at her and asked, "Has Alhaji returned?"
Shakeerah snapped, "Yes. Now listen to me, Mama, I am warning you: keep your mouth shut, or else you will taste the Day of Judgment early!"
The old woman slapped her hands against her cheeks in shock and gasped, "Me? Leave me out of this! Even if you want to slap your own cheeks, what does this have to do with me?"
Shakeerah walked out to the waiting car. Daddy pushed the door open for her, climbed in, and closed it behind him. Even though Shakeerah couldn't hear their exact words, she knew he would be on edge—it was just how he was made.
Daddy turned to the old woman and asked, "Safura? I hope you didn't mention anything about what is going on to my new bride?"
The old woman's heart skipped a beat. She pressed a hand to her chest and stammered, "Me, Alhaji? Spare me! From the moment I saw her, I could tell she wasn't an ordinary person. She kept invoking the name of Allah, and when I offered her the food I cooked with blood, she completely refused to touch it."
Daddy nodded. "Good. That doesn't matter as long as she doesn't find out who we really are."
The old woman replied, "Well, she certainly doesn't know that."
Daddy pulled out a thick wad of cash, handed it to the old woman, and bade her farewell. She waved after them as Daddy stepped on the gas and drove away.
Shakeerah looked over at him and said, "Wallahi, Papi, Allah must surely love you because of your charity. That old woman told me everything—she said she is a displaced person from Maiduguri whose entire family was killed, and she fled here, and you helped her!"
Daddy smiled, "That's right, My Queen."
Shakeerah put on a pitiful pout and cooed, "Oh, my sweet Papi, I luv yhu."
He planted a peck on her forehead and replied, "Me too, dear."
Act II: The Hospital Confrontation
Slowly, they arrived at the hospital. A group of people dressed entirely in red—shirts, trousers, and caps—had crowded the corridors. Their faces bore no trace of warmth or friendliness. Shakeerah glared at them with open disgust. Ten men and three women stood there, and every single one of them noticed the hostile look Shakeerah was giving them. With her hand hooked through Daddy's arm, they walked past as the men bowed in greeting, right up until they entered the inner room.
Inside sat Mr. Patrick, his deputy Alhaji Hamza, and their wives. They were all dressed in the same stark red attire, forming a circle around the room.
Daddy's heart plummeted. He had no idea they were going to be here.
Mr. Patrick and the others stared at Daddy and Shakeerah with terrifying, venomous eyes. Flustered, Daddy stammered, "Welcome, sir! Did you plan to come without letting me know?"
Deep inside Shakeerah's chest, a wild storm of panic and terror raged, though she masked it well. She swept her gaze across them one by one, then walked over to Aunty Amarya's hospital bed. Instantly, all the color drained from her face; she turned as pale as chalk, as though not a drop of blood remained in her veins. Shakeerah touched Amarya's body, then turned back to stare at Daddy.
Everyone locked glowing eyes on her. Putting on a slick, street-smart facade, Shakeerah wailed, "Oh my goodness! Papi, please, wallahi I'm starving! Take me home or buy me ice cream. Why did you bring me around these creepy people who look like demons? God didn't change you guys—you changed yourselves!"
Their faces twisted in fury. Speaking in broken Hausa, Mr. Patrick bellowed, "Sani! Who is this disrespectful girl you brought along? She doesn't even know how to greet people!"
The force of Mr. Patrick's angry outburst made the hospital bed shake. Shakeerah was deeply shaken, though she fought hard to keep only a tiny flicker of fear from showing on her face.
With a cracking voice, Daddy muttered, "She is... the wife I recently married."
They all shot Shakeerah a look of utter contempt. Without a shred of fear or hesitation, Shakeerah glared right back at them, causing their eyes to bulge in shock.
In a voice like thunder, Mr. Patrick roared, "Sani, you brought a plague among us! Get her and get out of this hospital immediately!"
With trembling hands, Daddy grabbed Shakeerah's arm and dragged her outside. Striding furiously, he yanked open the back door of the car and shoved her inside so hard she banged her head.
"Auchhhhh!" she cried, rubbing her bruised head.
Driving frantically into the deepening night, Daddy sped back home. They barely made it back alive. He drove straight into the compound, yanked her out of the car, and dragged her by the arm all the way to her private suite. The gateman watched in horror, deeply terrified by the violent spectacle unfolding before him.
Dragging her inside her parlor, he flung her onto one of the sofas and lunged at her in a blind rage. Shakeerah had never seen Daddy transform like this before. Grabbing her shoulders, he roared in a harsh, thunderous voice, "Shakeerah, who the hell are you?! What kind of evil witch are you? We've been warned for a long time that someone would come to destroy our cult—was it you all along?!" He let out another earth-shattering roar.
Shaking violently from head to toe, Shakeerah burst into tears. Terrified out of her wits, her voice trembling, she sobbed, "Papi, I don't know what you mean! Wallahi I am nobody except your wife..."
Before she could finish, he snatched her up and delivered a resounding slap across her face. Shakeerah screamed. He grabbed her by the throat and hissed, "You're lying, you hypocrite! I am going to kill you! Wallahi, Shakeerah, I loathe you! Anyone who interferes with my affairs will be eliminated—wallahi I hate you!"
As he spoke, he slammed her head repeatedly against the wall. Shakeerah let out a piercing shriek, sliding down to the floor as blood trickled from her forehead.
Daddy's phone began to ring. Checking the screen, he saw it was Mr. Patrick. He picked up, and Mr. Patrick commanded in a harsh voice, "Get over here immediately, we have a meeting."
Bursting into tears, Daddy looked down at Shakeerah and cried, "Shakeerah, you've ruined me! I regret ever knowing you, and with my own hands, I will kill you!" With that, he kicked her violently in the stomach and stormed out, leaving her lying on the floor like a corpse.
He drove off in the same car alongside Hajiya Sameera.
Act III: The Coven's Verdict
Absolute silence filled the dark chamber. Mr. Patrick, Alhaji Hamza, and the others stood huddled together with grim faces. Daddy knelt on the floor, frantic with anxiety.
"You have betrayed us, Sani!" Mr. Patrick growled. "Wallahi, wallahi, wallahi, you must bring us her blood this time! Do not dare argue with us. We must drink the blood of thousands of people tonight, including your gateman and your driver. As for that other woman, we've already dealt with her and disposed of her corpse. Pay attention and listen to what Boka Mukhit has to say."
Slowly, an ancient figure stepped forward leaning on a staff, short in stature and hunchbacked—resembling an ancient jinn.
Boka Mukhit burst into a cackling, hysterical laugh, then stepped forward and placed a large calabash filled with blood onto the center table. Fixing a terrifying glare on Daddy, he shrieked, "Sani! Your wife brought a curse right into your house! We didn't realize who she was until today at the hospital when Patrick laid eyes on her. If we aren't careful, she will be the total undoing of our cult. The only way to secure our wealth and status in this world and the hereafter is through this path!"
Quickly, Mr. Patrick and Alhaji Hamza turned to Boka Mukhit and asked in unison, "What is it, Boka?"
Cackling again, Boka Mukhit sneered, "We must feed the jinn the girl's blood until they drink it dry, and we will consume her raw flesh! That is the only way our cult will achieve absolute victory."
Mr. Patrick turned to Daddy and hissed, "There you have it, Sani. Choose: either yourself, Hajiya Sameera, or your new bride."
Hajiya Sameera immediately chimed in, "Oh no, absolutely not me! It has to be him and his insolent new wife."
With eyes glowing blood-red, Daddy declared, "I have already surrendered her blood! I have come to despise her, and I hand over the blood of my wife Shakeerah to the jinn Misewit!"
A wild cheer erupted in the chamber as the cult members slammed their staves against the floor and flicked their forked tongues in ecstasy—the greatest harvest they had received since before Daddy married Shakeerah.
That night, they drank blood as though it were water, completely detached from humanity. Mr. Patrick delegated Daddy, his wife, Hajiya Sameera, and Alhaji Hamza to go fetch Shakeerah.
Hajiya Sameera beamed with malicious joy; today, the girl she despised above all others would die a humiliating death. Boarding two cars, they sped toward Daddy's house around 1:30 AM.
Act IV: The Empty Nest and the Chase
The street was dead silent, broken only by the roar of their engines. When they reached the front gate, they found it swung wide open. Hurriedly, they drove inside. A group of thugs rushed toward the gateman's quarters, but to their utter shock, the gateman was nowhere to be found.
Frantically, they burst into Shakeerah's suite. The door was wide open, and blood stained the floor. Yet, search as they might, there was no trace of Shakeerah. Panic gripped them completely.
Hajiya Sameera threw her hands over her head and began shrieking. Even Daddy lost his composure, screaming in blind panic. He grabbed his phone and dialed Haji Harirah (Shakeerah's mother), but the line went straight to voicemail ("switched off"). Hurling his phone across the room in frustration, he turned to one of the thugs and shouted, "Wasting time won't help us! Get ready right now in the middle of the night; we are heading to Zaria to Shakeerah's mother's house, because I have no doubt she fled there! But where on earth did the gateman go?" That was a question none of them could answer.
Alhaji Sani called Mr. Patrick to inform him of the situation. Mr. Patrick roared into the phone as if he wanted to crush it, screaming, "Wallahi, Alhaji Hamza, don't you dare come back here without that cursed girl, Alhaja Sani, and your wicked wife Sameera!"
Trembling with fear, Daddy, Alhaji Hamza, and two male thugs piled into the cars and sped off toward the Zaria highway that very night.
Mr. Patrick's wife, Hajiya Sameera, and the others turned back toward the coven, flatly declaring that Hajiya Sameera refused to sleep in that house, and unless Shakeerah was found, they were done with that estate forever—or until the afterlife.
Hajiya Sameera wept bitterly, cursing Daddy and Shakeerah, because her gut told her that her own life was rapidly reaching its end.
