THE MADMAN'S WIFE
Story and Written by: UMMU RUFAIDAT
Alhamdulillah! All praise and gratitude belong to Allah, the Lord, Creator of everyone and everything. May the highest tides of peace and salvation be showered upon our leader, our Prophet, the finest of creation, Muhammadur Rasulullah (S.A.W), and upon his noble family, his companions, and all those who strictly adhere to the righteous path from this moment until the Day of Resurrection.
DEDICATION
To my dear friend, sister, and trusted confidante:
HALEEMA MUHAMMAD ABDULLAHI (HALEEMATOU)
(Kagengen labari)
Chapter 1: The Weight of Destiny
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
"For the love of God, Meenah! How can they possibly decree that I am to be wedded to a literal madman? Of all the eligible suitors in this town, of all the stable men who sought my hand only to be aggressively driven away by my guardians—how can it be that they found no one worthy to give me to except an insane man? A man whose true lineage and origin are completely unknown! Is it simply because I lost both of my biological parents that I am deemed entirely devoid of protection and worth?!"
Hannatu (Hannah) finalized her desperate inquiry as she dissolved into a profound, heart-wrenching sob that echoed with raw emotional agony.
"For God's sake, Hannah, compose yourself!" Meenah interjected softly, trying to soothe her friend. "Why subject your mind to such immense distress over a decree you know is entirely immutable? Agitating your soul will only grant your detractors a massive level of satisfaction. My singular plea to you is this: mask your pain, act as though this match does not fracture your spirit, and faithfully follow your husband.
Do not entertain the thought that because he lacks his mental faculties, you can treat him with reckless disdain. He may be devoid of sanity, but our Creator is intimately aware of everything unfolding across your life. Choose to be his sanctuary and his shield. Live with him in absolute honor, and accord him the same unyielding obedience you would offer a man of perfectly sound mind.
Hannah, despite the deep affection I harbor for you, I have never once felt an internal aversion to this marriage between you and this nameless wanderer."
Hannah lifted her tear-stained face, her eyes locking directly onto Meenah’s. Bursting into another torrent of weeping, she whispered:
"So it is officially finalized? Auren Mahaukaci—the wedding to a madman—is now my irreversible reality?"
Meenah gently wiped the cascading tears from Hannah’s cheeks, her voice laced with deep empathy. "You must exercise absolute patience, my dear sister. Come, let us return home immediately before your prolonged absence is noticed, lest Inna subjects you to another physical assault."
"Well, look who finally decided to grace us with her presence! You worthless, unprincipled wanderer!"
Inna’s harsh, grating voice boomed across the courtyard before Hannah could even cross the threshold of the house.
"From whose father's house are you returning that I have been forced to search for you to no avail? Do you foolishly assume your late mother will rise from her grave to prepare the household meal?! Hurry up and finalize the cooking before my biological children return home to meet an empty table!
You useless vagrant! This is precisely why I insisted you be paired with an untamed lunatic of your exact caliber—you deserve each other! Now, clear out of my sight before I structurally fracture your bones! Your entire lineage is full of witches anyway, so a madman is your perfect match. Even if you choose to spiritually consume his flesh, it will be of no consequence, seeing as no one knows his true origin!"
Wiping the residual moisture from her face, Hannah lowered her gaze and whispered: "May Allah soothe your anger..."
"Shut your treacherous mouth, you hypocrite!" Inna barked.
Refusing to utter another syllable, Hannah silently navigated the courtyard and walked into the dilapidated kitchen (Madafi).
Section 1.2: The Taunts of the Town
"A groom! Look at the grand groom!!"
A group of local young men jeered maliciously, their voices dripping with mockery as they unleashed a wave of condescending laughter toward the nameless wanderer.
One of the youths stepped forward, a smug grin stretching across his face. "Personally, nothing brings me greater joy than this impending marriage. I distinctly remember approaching Hannah to express my romantic intentions, and she treated my advance with absolute disdain. Well, look at where we are today—the sweetest candy has ultimately fallen into the dirt. She rejected stable men only to end up in a legal union with a lunatic whose background cannot be traced by any living soul!"
"And he doesn't even possess a definitive name or trade!" another youth chimed in, laughing hysterically.
The third member of the group, standing slightly to the side, let out a soft sigh of reluctant pity. "To be completely honest with you guys, I harbor a deep sense of compassion for Hannah. Given her extraordinary natural beauty and her high level of Islamic education, it is an absolute tragedy that her life’s trajectory is culminating in a marriage to a madman."
"Oh, please! God forgive me, but she brought this catastrophic outcome entirely upon her own head," the first speaker retorted defensively. "Had she accepted my love back then, she would be preparing for a magnificent wedding with me today."
"Oh, shut up!" the second youth scoffed. "What business would a girl like Hannah ever have with a clown like you? Even in his state of absolute insanity, that madman is infinitely more handsome and visually commanding than you could ever hope to be!"
"Watch your mouth, you fool!" the first youth snapped, his ego visibly bruised. "Are you seriously claiming that a certified lunatic possesses a superior physical appearance to me?!"
"I am merely stating an undeniable fact! By Allah, if that madman whom you all look down upon hadn't suffered a severe cerebral injury, he wouldn't even look in your direction. Despite his mental fragmentation, his extraordinary, top-tier handsome features cannot be hidden. It is a tragedy of our society that the moment a human being suffers a psychological affliction, they lose all baseline of dignity and respect in the eyes of the public."

└───────────────────────────────┘ └───────────────────────────────┘Just as the youth opened his mouth to launch into a defensive tirade, they suddenly froze. "Ba Asali" (The One Without Origin—as the townspeople coldly labeled the madman) was charging directly toward them with an intense, aggressive determination. He was clearly intent on inflicting physical discipline, a treatment he regularly dispensed to anyone who dared cross his path or mock his state.
"My feet, do not fail me now!" one of them yelled.
In an instant, the group scattered in absolute terror, running at maximum speed. They were fully aware that if Ba Asali managed to secure a physical grip on any of them, he would systematically thrash them until they were completely broken.
As the chaos cleared, Hannah happened to be walking down that exact path. She paused, her gaze locking onto him. It was an established anomaly in the neighborhood that while the madman barred everyone else from utilizing this particular walkway, he routinely stepped aside to let her pass without the slightest hint of aggression. This behavior consistently baffled the community, especially since he had once launched a violent assault on Hannah’s paternal uncle (Baffa), requiring a massive intervention from the neighborhood men to rescue him. In fact, the very catalyst for this forced marriage was a separate incident where the madman had severely thrashed Inna.
He stood completely still, his eyes tracking her movements just as she was observing his. A lone, heavy tear escaped Hannah’s lashes and traced a path down her cheek as she internally mourned her bleak future, while simultaneously feeling a profound wave of pity for the silent man standing before her.
She shuddered to think of the fast-approaching day when they would be left entirely alone inside a house—just her and an unpredictable madman. A deep fear gripped her marrow; if she accidentally executed any action that displeased him, he could easily beat her to a state of physical incapacitation with absolutely no one to rescue her.
As she drew parallel to his position, he suddenly stepped forward, completely blocking her path. He extended his hand toward her, his large, piercing eyes locking directly into hers.
Chapter 2: The Exchange in the Dust
Hannah stared at his open palm, and then looked down at the plastic bag she was holding. It contained a fresh portion of Awara (fried soy cakes) that Inna had explicitly sent her to purchase for the family. She knew he never begged for food; he normally took whatever he wanted by sheer physical force. Yet, today, he was standing there, consciously and politely requesting it from her.
She felt entirely incapable of denying his request, but her mind was instantly paralyzed by the terrifying thought of the violent retribution Inna would unleash upon her if she returned empty-handed. Before she could finalize her internal calculation, the madman gently but firmly shook his extended hand again, demanding the offering.
Hannah lifted her eyes, and her gaze was instantly captured by his. In that precise micro-second, she felt an overwhelming, almost hypnotic aura of sheer charisma radiating from him.
Without her conscious authorization, her fingers relaxed, releasing the plastic bag into his waiting palm. A subtle, incredibly nuanced smile graced his lips—a fleeting expression that only a deeply observant soul could recognize as a genuine sign of gratitude.

| As Hannah walked back toward her household, her mind was entirely detached from her physical body. She was completely consumed by two conflicting anxieties: the impending domestic execution she was about to face from Inna, and the enigmatic nature of the madman. Deep within her heart, she harbored a quiet certainty that there was a profound, hidden mystery surrounding his true identity—a reality she believed she alone had the intuition to perceive. | ||
| Despite his face currently being heavily stained with charcoal and dust, his underlying physical aesthetics were undeniable. His features possessed a rare, elite symmetry that most casual observers missed due to his unkempt state. Yet, any individual who exercised true visual focus would instantly realize that he belonged to the absolute highest class of physical beauty. There was a dormant, locked composure within his frame that occasionally broke through his chaotic behavior. | ||
| "Peace be upon you..." Hannah initiated softly as she stepped into the compound. | ||
| "Where on earth is my marketplace errand, you treacherous child?!" Inna screamed, completely cutting off her greeting before Hannah could even advance into the central courtyard. | ||
| "Um... you see... the truth is..." Hannah stammered, her voice trembling violently. | ||
| "The truth is what?! You absolute, destitute curse of a child! Is it true what the neighborhood children just shouted across the fence—that you willingly handed my premium Awara over to that wretched lunatic?!" Inna’s face contorted into an expression of absolute malice. "By Allah, you will pay for this with your blood! I refuse to incur a single monetary loss because of your foolishness, and I will personally extract the financial value of my snacks from your hide!" | ||
| Dum! Dum! Dum! | ||
| Without a moment's delay, Inna descended upon her, raining a heavy, continuous succession of physical blows across Hannah’s fragile frame. Hannah screamed in absolute agony, her voice desperately crying out for a savior, but her pleas were entirely in vain. There was no human entity present within the domestic sphere willing to intervene. By the time Inna finally detached her hands, gasping heavily for breath, Hannah lay on the hard ground, completely broken and physically exhausted. |
Chapter 3: The Plunder of an Inheritance
Meanwhile, the moment Ba Asali received the snack from Hannah, he exited the immediate vicinity. He walked down the road, methodically consuming the fried soy cakes until his hunger was completely satisfied.
Finding himself down to the final three pieces, he casually tossed them into a nearby public refuse dump (Bola) before continuing his aimless journey toward an unknown destination, his large eyes staring blankly at the horizon.
With exactly one week remaining before the forced nuptials, Baffa (Hannah's paternal uncle) had successfully finalized the unauthorized sale of a massive agricultural estate that had belonged entirely to Hannah's late biological father.
He had liquidated the prime farmland for the sum of 950,000 Naira—an act executed not out of genuine economic necessity or administrative wisdom, but out of pure, unadulterated greed.

└───────────────────────────────┘ └───────────────────────────────┘Baffa sat in his private room, his mind working rapidly as he calculated his next financial move. He was determined to extract the maximum possible financial profit from this forced marriage arrangement, knowing fully well that once Hannah was tied to a madman, there would be no legitimate authority capable of questioning his management of her father's multi-million Naira inheritance.
His greedy thoughts eventually turned toward the remaining real estate assets left behind by his late brother. The portfolio included two distinct properties: a primary, well-constructed house valued at approximately 1.5 Million Naira, and a modest, three-room residential structure that the deceased patriarch had specifically purchased to provide free shelter and education for underprivileged Quranic students (Almajirai).
Tragically, immediately following his brother's demise, Baffa had aggressively evicted all the students from the charity home, falsely claiming the property was a shared family inheritance that needed to be preserved for the true lineages.
Out of the massive fortune he had secured from plundering her father's assets, Baffa allocated a minuscule fraction to purchase a tiny, substandard property for Hannah and her future husband. The structure was a basic concrete block building consisting of a solitary room, a small bathroom stall, a tiny kitchen area, and a crude veranda roof.
Chapter 4: The Grip of the Groom
Hannah walked down the unpaved street, her mind entirely lost in a maze of painful thoughts—a mental state that had now become an inseparable part of her daily life. She was so detached from her immediate surroundings that she didn't realize she was on a direct collision course with another human body until the physical impact occurred.
A sharp wave of terror rippled through her spine. She took a step back, her eyes wide with apprehension as she slowly lifted her gaze. Her eyes instantly locked into those of her husband-to-be.
His face was completely covered in a thick layer of blue laundry dye and charcoal powder, presenting a truly terrifying visual image. His large, prominent eyes were rolling wildly in their sockets, flashing with an unpredictable, chaotic energy.
Two conflicting emotions instantly struck Hannah’s heart: a profound, paralyzing fear of his physical proximity, and a deep, agonizing sense of compassion for his tragic condition. She stood frozen, observing him as he intently mapped her facial features.
Before she could execute a defensive retreat, his large hand shot forward, clamping firmly around her wrist. Without uttering a single word, he turned and began dragging her along the path behind him.
Hannah’s heart pounded against her ribs as her terror reached an absolute peak. He maintained his unyielding grip on her hand until they reached the center of a massive, heavily contaminated public refuse dump. Only then did he release her wrist, settling his frame onto the dirty ground before reaching up to yank her hand downward, commanding her to join him in the dirt.
Hannah looked at the environment; it was an absolute wasteland, completely overflowing with filth and jagged debris. Refusing to sit directly in the waste, she carefully lowered her body onto the surface of a small, smooth stone she spotted nearby.
He stared intensely at her face before barking in a loud, demanding tone:
"I want to eat food!"
Hannah looked at him, her mind spinning into a panic. Where on earth was she supposed to secure a meal for him at this precise moment? Even within her own household, she was entirely dependent on her younger cousin, Haajara—Inna and Baffa’s biological daughter, who had beautifully refused to inherit her parents' cruel dispositions—to secretly smuggle remnants of food to her room just so she could survive.
"I want to eat food!!!" he repeated, his voice rising to a booming, aggressive crescendo.
At that exact moment, Meenah happened to be walking down the main road adjacent to the wasteland. The loud, demanding echo of the madman's voice instantly caught her attention, causing her to halt in her tracks and peer into the dump.
A wide, mischievous grin broke across Meenah’s face as she spotted the duo. She burst into a playful, mocking laugh. "Well, well, well! Look at the gorgeous bride and her magnificent groom! Is this how high-premium romance is conducted nowadays—right in the middle of a refuse dump? Truly, your love has reached an absolute interstellar dimension!"
"Please, I am not in the mood for jokes, Meenah!" Hannah pleaded desperately, her eyes wide with anxiety. "For the love of God, step closer and assist me!"
"Who? Me?! Absolutely not!" Meenah yelled back, taking a physical step backward. "I value my life entirely too much! If you see me in the afterlife, it means I was carried there—but my own two feet will never carry me into the physical radius of that man!
This is an individual who routinely thrashes grown men to the point of absolute physical ruin! If he secures a grip on my fragile body, even if I survive the encounter, I am entirely certain I will return home with permanently fractured limbs!"
"For God's sake, Meenah, please listen to me!" Hannah wept. "Come closer, I swear to you he will not execute any harmful action against your person!"
"May the Almighty protect me from such a venture! Look, because your biological bloodlines seem to have a unique harmony, he always waits for you to pass before he resumes his madness. But that protection does not extend to me!"
"Fine, if you refuse to step closer, I understand," Hannah conceded, her voice cracking. "But for the love of Allah, run to your house right now, secure any available portion of food, and bring it here immediately."
"Now that is a reasonable directive I can safely execute. Stand firm, I will return shortly," Meenah replied.
Turning on her heel, she hurried back toward her family house.
Hannah remained seated in the dirt under the unblinking gaze of the madman until Meenah returned, holding a covered silver metal bowl in her hands.
"Here is the meal you requested," Meenah called out, halting at a safe distance. "Step forward and collect it from me!"
"Oh, come on, Meenah! Just take a few steps closer and hand it over!" Hannah urged.
"Never! I dare you to step forward and receive it yourself!"
Hannah braced her palms against the stone, intending to rise to her feet, but the moment she shifted her weight, she felt a strong, metallic grip clamp around her wrist. She looked down; Ba Asali had tightly grabbed her arm, preventing her from leaving his side.
She looked into his eyes and said softly, "Please let go. I am merely going to collect the food for you."
He stared at her face for several prolonged seconds. Suddenly, he let out a loud, unhinged burst of laughter that echoed across the clearing. He laughed with such intense force that his entire torso rocked back and forth.
Taking advantage of his sudden distraction and loosened grip, Hannah quickly detached her hand, stepped out of the refuse dump, and collected the silver bowl from Meenah—who turned and bolted down the street at maximum speed the moment the container left her fingers.
